Inviting lookalikes without being a spammer

The etiquette and the law of reaching out to people who look like your best readers.

Lookalike outreach lives on a narrow ridge: done well it's a personal invitation, done lazily it's cold spam with extra steps. The difference is specificity, volume, and honesty.

The etiquette

  • Reference the true reason: 'people with your job already read this' is honest targeting, say it plainly
  • One person, one email, written like you'd want to receive it — no fake 'quick question' subject lines
  • Offer the exit up front: one click to see it, zero pressure, no sequence of 'just bumping this'
  • Volume discipline: tens per week, personally reviewed — not thousands via automation

The law, briefly

B2B one-to-one outreach is generally lawful in most jurisdictions when it's relevant, honest about the sender, and offers a working opt-out — but GDPR/PECR expect legitimate-interest reasoning for EU recipients, and CAN-SPAM requires truthful headers and unsubscribe handling. When in doubt: fewer, better, more honest emails. (This is orientation, not legal advice.)

Why drafts-not-sends matters

Every invite in ListFunnel is a draft you approve individually. That's a product decision with a reason: the moment invites become a firehose, you're running cold outbound with a nicer name, and both your reply rate and your reputation know it.

Run this on your own list.
